Why is Hemp hailed as the latest superfood?

Only yesterday, kale was at the tip of everyone’s tongue, backed by medical professionals, nutritionists, naturopaths and alternative practitioners alike. However it feels like almost overnight, new “superfoods” are being thrust upon us mere mortals, with only a small handful truly worthy of that title. Enter hemp, the latest competitor in the race for the coveted crown of nature’s greatest remedy.

Hemp Raviolo

We’d say rightfully so, seeing as a single serving of hemp provides a nearly perfect balance of the essential fatty acids needed by the human body. Throw protein, fibre, iron, vitamin E and all of the essential amino acids in the mix and you achieve what is being hailed as the most nutritionally complete food source in the world. It comes as no surprise then that stars like Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow and international model Alessandra Ambrosio swear by hemp and its numerous health benefits.

So if it’s such a beneficial food, then why has it taken this long for us to catch on?

In Australia, the sale of hemp food was only legalised in November 2017, even though worldwide it was already being used as a staple in many diets. Cultures throughout history have traditionally used hemp to treat ailments such as inflammation and chronic pain and aches. More notably, Chinese medicine has long included hemp to help treat a variety of conditions, including pain relief, gut disorders and anxiety.

The list of benefits doesn’t stop there, however. Hemp has also been hailed for its unique anti-ageing benefits, largely due to the omega fatty acids that are known to nourish and plump the skin whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines and increasing moisture. Hemp is also known for its treatment of stress, anxiety and depression, with many consumers claiming it is the ultimate cure for their physiological conditions.

Nowadays, you can find hemp in protein powders, oils, cosmetic products, clothing and more.

While the health benefits are attractive enough, for real Sydney foodies, the mild, nutty zest paired with complementary elements creates a culinary experience like no other.
